  • Workshop In Progress

Kids, Cup Cakes & Poster Problems employs a Poster Problem Clinic which helps develop literacy while learning to work like a mathematician. In this case the technique introduces an investigation which is a rewrite of Task 212, Monkeys & Bananas. The change of story shell is to make use of Poly Plug - which are available in many schools - because they make acceptable cup cake representations, but not very convincing bananas.

These photos are from the workshop recently presented at the MAV December Conference. See Link List below for more on the Poster Problem Clinic technique and for a link to Monkeys & Bananas where you will also find the Kids & Cup Cakes poster.

Concrete materials were available and
every team needed them to get into the problem.

  • Holiday Reading

Menu Maths & Other Models for Making Mathematicians has been added to the Web Papers. Later in January when you start to think about returning to school, this might be just the article you want to read. When it was first published in Mathematics Teaching, November 2013, the editors wrote:

There is much to consider here, but Menu Maths has the potential to initiate significant change in the classroom. This 'read' could be a game-changer... (p.4)

  • Last Chance

Mathematics Centre is a professional development resource. Doug Williams manages the professional learning, web site and communications. Ina Koetsier manages resources and distribution. All our resources support a Working Mathematically curriculum and many can only be purchased through Mathematics Centre. The feedback we have is that our resources are valued. For example:

We have used Poly Plugs this year with multiplication/division/arrays/fractions etc. Kids love using them.
Erika Tokich, Year 3, Good Shepherd School, Amaroo
Ina intends to retire, therefore, her part of the business is for sale. If a buyer becomes available, Ina and Doug will work closely with them to pass on the knowledge and experience which underpins the value and good will of the business.

Journals were used both to support the model making with materials and develop symbolic representations of the problem,
including algebraic expressions that can be represented with a spreadsheet.

  • Tasks of the Month
    Two new cameos this month.
The Task Cameo Content Finder has been updated to include these tasks.

    • What's In The Bag? Students explore sampling from a population and develop techniques for predicting the population based on a limited number of samples. No right answer, but evidenced-based conclusions expected in the same way that 'real world' surveys are expected to provide reasonable indications of truth.
    • Greedy Pig is a probability based game that can bring success using several strategies. But which strategy is best. Students are expected to play the game, gather data and explain how to carry out experiments that will identify which strategy is best. Evidence is expected, but it is not likely that a firm conclusion can result without the use of Maths300 software.
