- Working Mathematically in W. A.
Task 28, Plate Triangles, was a developed on the floor of a classroom at Milikapiti School, Melville Island. Ever since, it has needed significant floor space to investigate, as these teachers discovered in their workshop this week. This was one of several tasks, Picture Puzzles and whole class investigations during the day which were linked by Triangle Numbers. The title of the workshop was Working Like a Mathematician in the Classroom. |
|
 |
Jointly organised by the Association of Independent Schools of WA and the Catholic Education Office the invitation to participate was also issued to government schools. Around 40 secondary teachers indulged themselves mathematically and educationally as the journey, begun on Day 1 in September, continued. For many, one of the richest parts was the time provided for sharing the classroom trials which teachers had been invited to explore between the two days.
Teachers are the best resource in any system. It was fantastic to be involved with such a competent and enthusiastic group and fabulous to be working with systems willing to invest in their teachers. Given their experiences with Triangle Numbers, no doubt many will be very interested in the new cameo below which presents those special numbers in an entirely new context.

Squound
Dear Doug,
Once again, thank you for an excellent workshop on Tuesday. My colleague and I both used the Squound task in our classrooms this week and it worked really well. The students were fully engaged in the process and it was brilliant to witness every single one of them actively participating.
Kind Regards
Kate, MLC

Mirror Patterns 2
Hi Doug,
I've made up a basic investigation guide for Mirror Patterns 2, and also a sheet of pictures to help think about the Why is that so? part of the investigation. You have already described the maths involved in the task cameo but you may wish to add either or both of these sheets.
Damian, St. Mary MacKillop College
See Link List below for Mirror Patterns 2 to find Damian's files. The 'sheet of pictures' is a creative way to use a camera to produce student materials.
- Tasks of the Month
Two new cameos this month.
The Task Cameo Content Finder has been updated to include these tasks.
- Smooth Edge Tiles is a story shell about creating tiled rectangular patios. Only the tiles on the border have smoothed (curved) edges. Some of these tiles have one smooth edge. The corner tiles have two. The challenge is to calculate the number of each tile - 0, 1, or 2 smooth edges - needed for a given size patio.
- Triangles & Colours is so easy to state and easy to start. It is simply about making equilateral triangles with coloured sticks of various colours. But very soon we are challenged to count something tricky, then we are lured into the hunt for patterns and, if we want to, we can get deeply engrossed in symbolic algebra, formulas and even proof by induction.
Click a photo to access its cameo, or access all current cameos through the Link List below.
Keep smiling,
Doug.
