Procedure
Children take turns to complete these steps.
- Roll the dice.
- Arrange plugs to make the spot shape on the dice.
- Write the number on the calculator.
Sometimes children can also be asked to draw what they have made with the plugs and written on the calculator.
The more often the children play the game, the more likely it is that you will see their counting strategies change. To encourage this to happen try variations such as:
- Giving the children a dice each so that they both roll and make and then work out together the total number of plugs ... Can you check that another way?
- Giving the children a dice each so that they both roll and make and then work out together the 'more than' or 'less than' amount that one person has compared to the other ... Can you check that another way?
- Giving the children two dice each to roll and make and then working out together the total number of plugs (or difference between the two numbers of plugs) ... Can you check that another way?
- Returning to the single dice situation, but every pair rolls, makes and writes once only and leaves their dice, plugs and calculator sitting on the table. Let's work how many plugs have been used in the room altogether? ... Could we check the answer another way?
