- Cube Tube
Welcome to a new section of Mathematics Centre. Cube Tube is designed to catch the vision of learning to work like a mathematician by providing video with supporting documentation. Our first Cube Tube entry is titled An Ocean of Possibilities. It takes the view that we should stop teaching mathematics ... and replace it with? Detail is supplied in the article accompanying the video.
During the upcoming Christmas/ New Year/ Summer break there is bound to be some time when it is too hot, too cold, too wet or too snowy to go outside. On those occasions, consider visiting Cube Tube. See Link List below.

- Maths Around the Kitchen Table in UK
The National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) in UK has just published an article by Doug Williams & Andy Martin on Maths Around The Kitchen Table, which includes background to the development of the Library Kit. NCETM supports the professional development of teachers of mathematics through an extensive online learning community and a network of regional coordinators. It is funded by the Department for Education and is managed by Tribal Education Ltd.
As a result of this article, Peter Hubble, regional co-ordinator based at Robert Napier School, Gillingham, Kent, prepared video case studies of parents working at home with students on Mathematics Centre tasks. See Link List below to find the article and the videos. Any one can visit the links and members of the NCETM site are invited to add comments.
- Addition to Square Numbers
The cameo for Task 111, Square Numbers, was only mounted last month and already there are two From The Classroom additions. One is from Damian Howison, MacKillop College, Swan Hill, who happened to read the cameo almost immediately after one of his girls became involved in the task. As a result, Damian has provided a small investigation guide to share. The second addition gives reason for the task to be revisited in Year 12. See Link List below.
- Tasks of the Month
Two new cameos this month.
- Calendar opens the door to other calendar puzzles by challenging students to be able to represent all possible dates (1 - 31) by using numbers written on the faces of one or two cubes. It has a place in unit on time.
- Dividing Shapes offers several spatial perception challenges, the answers to which beg questions about fractions, perimeter, area and growth patterns.
Click a photo to access its cameo, or access all current cameos through the Link List below.
Keep smiling,
Doug.
